Burst Hoses

Burst water hoses unfortunately are a common occurrence inside a home. Some of us have been lucky enough to escape coming home to a flooded kitchen, bathroom or laundry.  The common causes of burst pipes generally occur with a hose connected to a dishwasher, mixer tap, washing machine or ice making fridge that has ruptured. Flooding as a result of a burst hose can cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage if not acted upon quickly and not all insurance companies will foot the entire bill for repairs to replace flooring and carpets.

Rubber hoses can become brittle with age and run the risk of rupturing if not inspected regularly.  Set a schedule every 6 months to do a routine inspection of the hoses under your sinks, to the dishwasher, behind your ice making refrigerator and to the washing machine.

Make sure there are no bulges in the rubber hoses or if the hose is made of stainless steel, you are looking for parts that are beginning to rust, unravel or are bulging. Ensure the hose to your ice maker fridge is not pinned against the back of the fridge and the wall. Washing machine hoses should not have any sharp kinks or bends in them as this can lead to weakness.

If you do come across any suspect hoses, it is always best to replace them to prevent a calamity later down the track. You can also invest in flood stop valves and flow regulators which can be fitted to existing or new taps.  These devices immediately cut off water flow at the tap should a hose burst.

Remember, if you are in the midst of a flooding emergency from a burst hose contact MJ Walker Plumbing, we’ll be there to assist you as soon as possible. If you would like to arrange an inspection to check on your hoses or for installation of replacements, contact our friendly team.

The benefits of installing a Food Waste Disposer

Food waste disposers commonly known as garbage disposal units are a viable alternative to traditional food waste methods of rubbish making its way to landfill.  Every day families all over the country are producing massive amounts of food waste that ultimately gets buried in these landfill sites, leading to huge areas of rotting garbage situated within our communities.

A food waste disposer is quite simple in its process.  The unit is installed by a licensed plumber under the sink and food waste is placed inside it.  The waste is ground down so finely with very little use of water so that it can safely pass through our pipes into the waste water treatment plants. The environmental benefits are huge, with less rubbish making its way to landfill to create methane gas.

No more trips to the garbage bin outside for the home owner. The food that can’t be recycled into compost can simply be put down the garbage disposal unit and with the flick of a switch make its way safely and in an environmentally friendly state to the water treatment plant.

Bits of food and oil should never make their way down your kitchen drain unless it has been processed through a garbage disposal unit.  This can lead to blockages and result in the need to call a licensed plumber to unblock the drain.

Should you experience a blocked kitchen drain or are looking to have a garbage disposal unit installed, MJ Walker are here to assist you.  We have a team of fully licenced and professional plumbers on hand, ready to go.
